10 Must-Have OTC Medications

Having a well-stocked first-aid kit can mean the difference between suffering through a headache or feeling relief faster. The Starwood Pharmacy Team has compiled their list of ten over-the-counter medications you should always have on hand.

  1. Pain and fever reducers like Advil or Tylenol. From aches and pains to headaches and fevers, pain and fever reducers are a must-have for any first-aid kit or medicine cabinet. Depending on your medical conditions, the decision on which one to take will differ. Please consult with your doctor or pharmacist about which one is recommended for you.

  2. Cold and flu medicine Congestion, runny nose, sore throat - we’ve all been there. With cold and flu season upon us, adding cold and flu medications to your medicine cabinet will help you start to feel better faster. (Note: If the package contains decongestants, it may not be recommended in certain patient groups such as those with high blood pressure).

  3. Cough medicine like Robitussin for those coughs that keep you up at night. (Not recommended for patients with certain medical conditions. Please consult your pharmacist on whether you can take this type of medication.)

  4. Allergy medicine (antihistamines) like Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec, Flonase, and Benadryl for your seasonal, indoor, and outdoor allergies. Remember these medications may cause drowsiness and some may not be recommended for certain age groups.

  5. Sore throat medicine like cough drops or throat sprays to help soothe irritation. These are not recommended in certain age groups.

  6. Upset stomach medicine like Tums, Pepto-Bismal, or Pepcid-AC. Sometimes you need upset stomach relief for indigestion, nausea, or diarrhea when you least expect it so be sure these are on your OTC list.

  7. Stool-softener and laxatives like Dulcolax for constipation and antidiarrheals like Immodium because in the bathroom is not the time to find out you don’t have what you need on hand.

  8. Itch relief cream for bug bites from ants or mosquitos or rashes - for when you just need the itch to stop.

  9. Triple antibiotic cream like Neosporin for wound cleaning and infection prevention for scrapes, cuts, and scratches.

  10. Wound care supplies like alcohol pads, bandages, gauze, cotton balls or swabs, etc.

Generic forms of brand name products (for example triple antibiotic cream for Neosporin) are often available as a more cost-effective option, and they contain the same active ingredient as the brand name form.
